Thread:
Less than 2 weeks ago, I was printing 3D face-shields for medics I knew locally. 3D printing is slow; I could make 7 a day.

I tweeted appealing for anyone locally with a 3D printer, to help out. I expected a couple of leads. Instead, 4,500 wonderful people retweeted.
From the many replies & offers of help, we formed http://covidprintoxford.com  in days.

We've made 1,000+ visors for doctors, nurses, GP receptionists, nursing homes, medics on home visits, care homes, pharmacies, speech therapists, COVID testing centres, opticians, in Oxfordshire.
The generosity of the 60+ team of printers, couriers, administrators, project managers, medical staff, lab technicians, tech experts, PR experts, fundraisers, and more has been humbling.

It is now a collective with a life of its own.
I hope that we will merely be first responders - volunteers arriving on the scene before professional organisations can make and distribute PPE to all those on the frontline risking their health to protect ours.

Why volunteers are needed, I don't know.
Until then, we will continue making, disinfecting, bagging and distributing these. We hope we will reduce the number of people getting sick - those at work and those they serve. We also hope to give those on the frontline the psychological benefits of personal protection.
Anxiety at not being protected sufficiently is taking its toll. We need our frontline workers to be as confident as possible, focused on what matters, and able to carry on working to get us all out of this mess.

We are helping from the safety of our homes.
Medics and related professional are out there in the face of this. We owe it to them to do something for their physical and mental well-being.
Thankfully, we are not the only group doing this. Since my tweet, I've learned of national initiatives to 3D-print, other initiatives to sew scrubs and face-masks, school-children making adaptors to save medics' ears from bruising from all day wearing of PPE.
If you want to get involved, there will be an initiative near you. There are so many different types... some using particular skills, some raising money, all raising hope.
