Seeing @KurtBenkert active on Social Media always makes my day.
Quick blurb about this dude.
PT. 1
After getting done at App I got a student assistant spot at ECU under @RuffinMcNeill and working for @CoachGRiley @CoachDonnieK and @coachdavenichol
PT. 2
Anyone that’s worked in college knows this is the lowest on the totem pole for coaching. Consisting of a lot of film breakdowns and behind the scenes reports. Additionally student assistants are the ones picking up lunches and making sure players get to classes.
PT 3
I enjoyed the job and getting to learn how the entire machine works. The staff was awesome and going into camp everyone was confident with how things were going, that included the new QB to replace the great @_Scarden5 , Kurt Benkert.
PT. 4
Once again, I was a guy holding a clipboard during practices. My job was to write down the plays during practice so that we could tag it correctly on film after practice. Low, low assistant. Kurt would go out of his way to talk with me and the other student coaches.
PT. 5
If you don’t know Kurt’s season ended during a practice a couple weeks before the season because of a non-contact knee injury. That injury, would end up having a crazy impact on a bunch of people. Ruff and the staff were let go after the year.
PT. 6
I know I digress here but if that injury doesn’t happen, I probably don’t end up in Charlotte and I definitely don’t go through the things that made me a head coach at 26 years old. An example of everything happening for a reason.
PT. 7
This thread is about @KurtBenkert though.
One of my jobs was grabbing Kurt after class a couple of times and taking him to treatment. He probably doesn’t remember our conversation or even what I’m talking about but what he said stuck with me forever.
PT. 8
After the season ended we didn’t really get a talk to many players in the scramble, I was moved out in two days after the news of Ruff. But keeping up with @KurtBenkert was always a hobby and of interest to me. I knew that no matter what this guy was going to make it.
