A day of tiny, happy achievements.
Mum called with an eager, “how’s my birthday tweet doing?” Very well, I told her, messages from Canada, and Australia and the States. She told me she was quietly thrilled, that it had helped having something daft to think about. I agreed.
I finished a book, a noteworthy thing in itself these days, I’m so distracted. We all are. Settling to read is tough at the moment. But I had the time, and amazed myself with 180 pages. Go me.
And a long and relaxing video chat. The new normal. I would’ve run a mile had it been suggested a month ago. But it’s there now, easy to incorporate. I tinker at an Airfix kit - an old hobby rediscovered - while we talk. You wouldn’t be able to do that on the ‘phone.
I am reminded, rightly, to exercise.
Out on the green there are rooks shouting from the lime trees. They are noisier than I’ve known them, but that may be that the traffic noise has retreated. Starlings and jackdaws overhead.
It’s a short walk back, so I extend it, scanning the gaps between the houses and the likely spots and open areas for swallows. But nothing. They’ll be here, but nothing this evening.
