Starmer now has a problem. His and Angela Rayner's joint statement won't satisfy anyone on the left. Nor, from an emotional/anger point of view, should it. It's classic Starmer in its ambiguity.

But he also has an even deeper concern. Which is as follows.
Yesterday, you may have noticed the Tory accounts all lining up to condemn him merely asking about the lack of PPE. They're desperate to paint him as 'unpatriotic' or 'playing politics at a time like this' - all the while THEY play hideous, disgusting politics at a time like this
So if Starmer and Labour get bogged down in internal strife, imagine what the Tories are going to say. "This is the biggest crisis since the war... and the Labour Party is only interested in itself".

That's not some trivial danger. It's real and he'll know that only too well.
For myself, I'll reserve judgement until we see:

1. Who the independent investigator is

2. What the independent investigator concludes

I completely understand how angry so many are right now. I am too. I'm disgusted. But...
This is about due process in all aspects. And it's also about not walking straight into a Tory trap and how that would be portrayed.

Remaining calm, in other words, is the order of the day. Starmer will know he can't just chuck so many, including unions, under the bus.
He needs the energy, ideas, idealism and mobilising ability of the left just as much as he needs the rest of the party. And no way, no way in the world, will he be anything other than appalled by what's in the report.
Sometimes, on here, instant fury demands YOU MUST DO IT MY WAY OR ELSE. I'm every bit as guilty in that as anyone else.

But the bigger picture is also about remaining calm at a time of massive national crisis. The public will be appalled if we just descend into factionalism.
He knows that, I'm glad that he knows that, and I'm just as glad to have Angela Rayner as Deputy. A warm, kind human being who also isn't about to throw anyone innocent under a bus.

So... it's watch this space I guess. Not at all OK for many, I know - but due process demands it.
