As you might have imagined given the political climate, undocumented migrants losing their jobs due to "COVID" do not have access to relief that the government has begun to roll out.
This includes access to the $1,200 "stimulus" money that the CARES Act is giving taxpayers. Importantly, if ONE member of a mixed-status family filing jointly doesn't have a soc. security no. (i.e., is undocumented), the CARES Act allows for NO SUPPORT ($0) for the whole family
Meaning, they don't get even $500 for e.g., a US-born dependent, or $1,200 for the other taxpayer with a SSN. This is true even when the person w/o a SSN has been paying taxes in previous years (most undoc. folks pay taxes using an individual tax-identification number, or ITIN).
So, if you think the government should provide safety net for all tax payers, please call your Congressman and ask them to support a bill introduced by a few Congressmen (if you live in Colorado's second congressional district, Joe Neguse already signed on).
