RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR (2007)

An underseen and underrated shocker about a couple, him (Rory Cochrane) trapped inside the house, her (Mary McCormack) trapped outside, as toxic ash descends. Hitchcock would be proud.

HIDDEN (2015)

You probably haven’t seen this, and why should you? It’s only got Andrea Riseborough and Alexander Skarsgard hiding from monsters in a bunker and it was written and directed by the dudes who brought us STRANGER THINGS. 🤷‍♂️

PONTYPOOL (2008)

Based on Tony Burgess’ excellent novel PONTYPOOL CHANGES EVERYTHING, this nightmarish film delivers its virus via speech, a delicious concept aided in no small part by a career-best turn from the always reliable Stephen McHattie.

IT COMES AT NIGHT (2017)

Largely disregarded for not delivering upon the promise of its trailer, ICAN is nevertheless an effective psychostudy of the erosion of trust as people forced to hide from an existential threat begin to slowly come apart.

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

While the connections to the Cloverfield universe are largely irrelevant, this is still a terrific thriller, thanks in no small part to John Goodman’s wonderful turn as the villain and Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s kickassery.

REC 1-4/QUARANTINE

I’m tempted to go with the original Spanish film over the remake, but both are very effective no matter which one you see first. And while REC’s sequels vary in quality, all of them are worth a look. Stay in place, indeed.
