New headcannon: instead of being a go-fer errand boy, Roller is Optimus Prime's Bodyguard. Since Optimus is a Prime, there is no shortage of people plotting his demise. Though Optimus can defend himself, he has more important things to do than look over his shoulder 24/7
Roller is proud to be Prime's Bodyguard. He stays up while Prime sleeps, and takes care of the Trailer when Prime doesn't need him. Whenever he can be, he's by Prime's side. He's nimble and swift but brutally hardened by war. His bot mode is about Bumblebee sized.
Roller is there to ensure Optimus is only troubled with how he can save and free others and never has to worry about his own personal safety. Roller has one of the most involved jobs of all the Autobots.
Optimus and Roller's relationship is like Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman- they do good work together, but they're not friends and wouldn't "hang out." Their personalities just don't mesh. Prime doesn't approve of the methods he uses, but, they trust each other with their lives.
If roller does his job well, no one knows he's there. He's not afraid to use excessive force to get the job done.
I want a spotlight issue about this idea. Like an episode in a cartoon from a background character's perspective. Tonally Like the Justice League Action episode that reveals Booster Gold isn't lazy, he's constantly defending space time from ruptures.
Its alike in that no one really knows what Roller does, or if he does anything, because he keeps his actual job a secret and doesn't boast. Other bots look down on him or see him as useless, but if only they knew the hell he battles every day.
