I don’t know how to explain to people that even coming from an upper middle class background was just barely enough. I could never have afforded this. I could not afford an MCAT prep course. No member of my family but me has even been to Europe while classmates https://twitter.com/traependergrast/status/1249719961423134720
go multiple times a year. I will be the first to graduate with a doctorate degree of any kind in my family. My grandmother was the first to get a college degree, which she did by going to class at night after getting pregnant and married at 15.
I don’t think it is by accident that most of my closest medical school friends also do not come from wealthy backgrounds. I would be considered wealthy by many I grew up with & by my extended family but I feel the gap between my never-going-hungry wealth and
dual-professional-parents wealth often. Not to mention the experiences and knowledge available to those with physician parents/close relatives. Medicine is changing but is still a rich (white, cis) man’s game.
