Instead of abolishing the USPS as a quasi-public entity and replacing it with less efficient and equitably distributed private sector solutions, we should be reforming the Post Office as a fully public entity. Let them operate without a thought for profitability.
Bring back postal banking. Make the Postmaster General a cabinet level position again with a broad writ of keeping people connected.
Make the USPS an internet service provider.
Have the USPS administrate municipal-wide wifi.
I know that seems like an FCC thing and obviously the FCC would be involved in any national internet project but there are already post offices everywhere. The FCC's not running quasi-commercial operations in every city and town in the country.
Oh, and before this thread starts circulating too widely, let me clarify: I'm not saying replace mail with internet. I'm saying let's have the post office perform these vital functions in addition to the vital function of delivering mail.
