Teacher brag moment. đź’« To help my @UMN_HSJMC students grow their reporting skills, I asked them to interview a stranger who's been negatively impacted by #COVID19. The results were pretty impressive. Here's what they heard:
. @katiewermus talked to a nurse who's on the frontlines of helping #COVID19 patients at a Florida hospital. The nurse said they don't have enough protective gear to keep hospital staff safe & they are making life-changing decisions "more frequently and rapidly than ever before."
. @rmillswrites talked to a woman who gave birth to her 6th kid in late March. Her husband, a mechanic, is considered an essential worker and still going to work. “I worry about him coming and going with a baby in the house," she said.
. @JaneLee11146940 profiled an owner of a restaurant in South Korea who's seen a significant decrease in customers. The loss in revenue may force the business to close permanently. “I am so worried about the rent payment this month and even the next month," the owner said.
. @oknowles99 talked to a mortgage broker in British Columbia who's an essential worker but has had to completely change how she does her job to accommodate social-distancing rules. "No one is looking to get a mortgage or buy a house with everything that is happening," she said.
. @jour3101EU interviewed someone who's been laid off from a job at Bath and Body Works in a Wisconsin mall. She's living with her parents for now. “I miss ... being able to hang out with people without being scared," the woman said.
. @EmilyBaude found a stem cell researcher who's part of a group that grows retinal eye organoids. Their lab is closed, which means a project they've been working on for 2+ years is on hold. "It's like all that work ... and now we have to start over," the researcher said.
. @nurbaadam interviewed someone who studies culinary arts and interior design in Istanbul, Turkey. But, since school is shut down, she's had to move back to her parents' home in a small town in SW Turkey. "It's kind of odd to live with family."
. @RitaMarieWrites talked to a clinic receptionist in a small MN town. The clinic has had to cut expenses significantly and has furloughed 1/2 the staff. “I have kids and a family to take care of," she said. "I’m terrified that this is still going to last for a long while."
. @kian_ava profiled a college student who's preparing to graduate in May and had plans to complete a summer internship in Vietnam. Now, her plans have to change. "I've been preparing for after I graduate for the past couple of months," she said.
@whathejb talked to someone who worked for a Minneapolis nonprofit that mentors youth via spoken word and hip hop. But, since her work could only be done in-person, her contract ended. "The shut down is just really weighing on me," she said.
. @SkylarCWolfe spoke to a representative of a Minneapolis-based nonprofit that supplies food shelves. The org has seen a 25% jump in orders recently, and food shelves are distributing the food in new ways: via drive thrus & appointments.
. @EricaLe84515419 interviewed a high school student in South Korea whose classes have moved online but he doesn't have a laptop to do the work.
. @deleo085 profiled a fitness trainer in Minneapolis who is out of a job since the gym he worked for permanently shut down. “Concern and worry were on everyone’s faces," when staff received the closure announcement, he said.
. @ChloeJohansen9 interviewed a college student in Chicago who's struggling to stay focused on her online school work considering the circumstances. "It is hard to keep getting my schoolwork done and living life when there is a global crisis at hand," she said.
. @BaeckDonna talked to a pharmacy student in Chicago. Helping ppl with prescriptions, he said he's trying to protect himself from catching the virus. "But if it happens, it happens. This was part of our oath when we agreed to be part of the health care services."
