After all the lab 🧫🧪work, I got interested in #publichealth and went to grad school! @UofUHealth (MPH, 2013) I studied influenza transmission in schoolchildren and decided to pursue a #PhD in #epidemiology @UWMadison (👩‍🔬 became 👩‍💻) 3/10
With support from @UWGlobalHealth and @AndeanHealth, I also collected field data on climate 🌧️, environment 🌿, and mosquito abundance 🦟, to see if we could predict small-scale mosquito habitats/climate using #machinelearning (this is where coding became really important!) 5/10
There was a lot of #data to organize, manage, and clean before analysis and building models! My #coding skills were pretty rudimentary at the start (more on that tomorrow!) but improved a lot over this time period 6/10
After graduation, I started my joint #postdoc with @UpstateNews and @UFGeog. I’ve mostly been based at our field site in Machala (banana 🍌 capitol), Ecuador 🇪🇨, running studies on climate, environment, mosquitoes, dengue, respiratory disease, and ticks, among others! 7/10
Our site has hosted lots of collaborators and students through the SUNY Upstate Institute for Global Health: https://upstateglobalhealth.org/international-research/ and we do lots of outreach with local collaborators ( #rstats en español, anyone?) 8/10
As you can see, my research includes lots of data types and sources, #scicomm, coding, teaching, cleaning, and I’ve had a circuitous route while building all of these skills! I’m hoping to share more about this all week and I’m looking forward to hearing from all of you! 10/10
