I have been preparing to tweet about PRINCE OF EGYPT for two days and at no point did I stop crying
I am back inside from banging pots and pans and almost ready to hit play on PRINCE OF EGYPT (8pm EST!)

We’re using #RevueTweetAlong and #DumpsterRaccoon
OK GO!
PRINCE OF EGYPT begins from a perspective above never clarified - shifting clouds in dawn-light (Elijah says that "God is in the wind").

It then smash-cuts to the granite massiness of the Egyptian idol of Seti, leveraged up by the crowd. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Schwartz (usually a lyricist who delights in complexity) begins w basic elements of making bricks: the bare life of the enslaved.

In Exodus, the ingredients of bricks are actually a plot-point: Pharaoh punishes the slaves by denying them straw. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The first six minutes of PRINCE OF EGYPT were delivered as a block by Stephen Schwartz and Hans Zimmer, and the rest of the project felt obliged to live up to that example. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
We used the sequence of Moses's mother as inspiration for the #Empyre Hulkling rescue for @Marvel (along with its own theological descendant, the "Massacre of the Innocents", infamously painted by Rubens). #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Moses's mother is voiced by Ofra Haza, Israel's pop legend, who inimitably voiced her in almost every language dub. She passed only two years later, from AIDS-related complications. A true icon. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Val Kilmer and Christian Bale are in the select club who have played both Moses AND Batman! #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon https://twitter.com/damnyouwillis/status/1249852091243343873?s=20
Notably, Ramses uses the fallen nose as a plinth for his reconstruction efforts later in the film. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon https://twitter.com/damnyouwillis/status/1249852628424589312?s=20
Ramses II, who spends the whole film worrying about ruining the dynasty, is the eponymous (in his Greek name) Pharaoh whose ruin is confronted in Shelley's "Ozymandias." #DumpsterRaccoon #RevueTweetAlong
Feel like we should talk about this cast - Dreamworks began the now ubiquitous habit of casting huge names in animated films (til now mostly peopled by voice actors unknown to audiences). #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The directors also initially wanted to imitate the Disney habit of pet animals - including an evil cat for Ramses - but decided they wanted a different aesthetic and tone (including v little merch tie-ins). The dogs are all that survive. #DumpsterRaccoon #TweetAlong
Goldblum and Bullock initially terrified the directors by playing their scenes without sombreness, but they loved their sibling chemistry so much they kept those takes. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The Egyptians and their world are purposely depicted as more "2-D" than the Israelites and beyond, as tho their art were a reflection of a real aesthetic. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
His animator asked if he could please have the footage to copy! https://twitter.com/sarahwendling/status/1249855807535099913?s=20
The hieroglyphic sequence was overseen by an artist who had previously studied hieroglyphs for two years, and complained bitterly he had no use for that knowledge...til now. #DumpsterRaccoon #RevueTweetAlong
In Moses's vision, the death of the babies is witnessed by a VERY NOTABLE SYMBOL: the sun with a thousand hands - the Aten.

The Aten was the icon of Akhenaten, who tried to being monotheism to Egypt.

When he sees the actual painting, the Aten is gone.
"They were only slaves" is one of the most horrifying lines in cinema - all the more monstrous bc of Patrick Stewart's kind paternalism. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The film consulted 600 religious scholars, and the directors note their biggest note was to change the original version, in which Moses rescues his sister, Miriam.

They insisted it needed to be an anonymous man - that he was identifying not with his family, but with his people.
The best example is when Moses goes into the desert, and Spielberg asked them to begin with a large shot of Moses, that across dissolves becomes smaller and smaller. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon https://twitter.com/damnyouwillis/status/1249857518601453569?s=20
Miriam is an even more important figure than the film depicts - a prophetess who in some households is set water alongside Elijah, awaiting return. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon https://twitter.com/santoselhellper/status/1249856673243639808?s=20
the extreme horniness of this bath scene [freezes frame a few times]. #DumpsterRaccoon #RevueTweetAlong
Schwartz wrote several songs for Jethro before "Heaven's Eyes"; eventually they cracked the code on it when one of the directors handed him a poem he remembered from high school, "Measure of a Man." Some of the phrases are still evident. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The dancing was all choreographed by experts - including carefully making sure Moses and Tzipporah never touch until they're married! https://twitter.com/KenziePhoenix/status/1249859993118986242?s=20
ok, here's the ten minutes where I just cry through the whole thing. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The directors considered many possibilities for God's voice, including an elderly Charlton Heston, and ALL the cast, which they feared sounded like a pantheon.

They pared it back til it was just Val Kilmer - Moses's own voice, echoing back to him. #RevueTweetAlong
The bush, instead of being consumed by the flame, slowly grows and blossoms. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Moses takes off his sandals - and never puts them on again.

He is barefoot for the rest of the movie. #revuetweetalong #DumpsterRaccoon
The scene of Moses wordlessly relating what just happened to him to Tzipporah - who silently deflates - is a trick the directors stole from Hitchcock's TOPAZ, as they thought there was no way to convey the experience of the sublime. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
"Playing with the Big Boys Now" was supposed to be an upbeat joke number, complete with Las Vegas showgirls singing the Egyptian pantheon's name.

Then Hans Zimmer re-orchestrated it into a horror. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Spielberg's note was establish it's smoke and mirrors right at the top, then never show the trick again. #DumpsterRaccoon #RevueTweetAlong https://twitter.com/TheyAllDiedOops/status/1249863806030958593?s=20
Similarly, Hotep and Huy were supposed to be Siegfried and Roy, until Steve Martin and Martin Short got a hold of them.
Did you notice his comfort place is LITERALLY IN THE LAP OF THE STATUE OF HIS DAD??? LOL #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon https://twitter.com/KenziePhoenix/status/1249864860197736449?s=20
GOD-WISE. https://twitter.com/santoselhellper/status/1249864926748971011?s=20
one recurring leitmotif I love in this movie is the witnessing of children. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
HERE WE GO.
"The Plagues" is such a masterpiece of score and lyric, and is also a technological feat - 7 MILLION LOCUSTS appear onscreen! #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Ra the sun-god collapses as darkness falls. #DumpsterRaccoon #RevueTweetAlong
Spielberg specifically requested the double-faced shot. https://twitter.com/bertnerdtram/status/1249866517396606976?s=20
"No kingdom should be made on the backs of slaves." #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
Death is designed, like all God's appearances in the film, to evoke a gust of wind. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
There is, I would point out, suddenly no music at all.
A trick stolen from THE TEN COMMANDMENTS! https://twitter.com/KenziePhoenix/status/1249868193771872257?s=20
This shot was specifically inspired by the archive from CITIZEN KANE. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
The final shot of the plague of death is Orion, the hunter, whose triple star is thought to inspire the pyramids of Giza. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
"When You Believe" takes place over the course of the dawn - each shot successively with more daylight. #RevueTweetAlong #DumpsterRaccoon
