Anne Of Green Gables (2016 Version) -Movie Review.
I watched it so you don't have to :)
This Movie Review will be divided in parts.
There will be special points (highlights) throughout the entire thread.
Pics and Videos included.
Part 1: Characters.
-Anne Shirley: Very happy girl, likes to talk a lot, when she says she's sad her facial expressions say otherwise. The girl freckles seem to appear and dissappear depending on her mood.
Example 1 of bad acting/directing: when an actor can't cry for a scene so the director decides that it's best to cover the actress face and then put "crying sounds"
-Matthew Cuthbert: likes to talk a lot, he forgot he has social anxiety.
Matthew also has an entire scene chasing after a pig, which is a lot of exercise for an "old" man. The scene ends with the last pic.
-Marilla Cuthbert: very nice, her temper is un-existent, she doesn't seem to care a lot that they sent her Anne instead of a boy. She looks a lot younger than her younger brother (Matthew)
Example 2 of bad acting/directing: The girl can't fake cry. There's a lot of silence in between every line delivery, which makes the scene feel unnecessarily long.
-Gilbert Blythe: a mean and hateful boy, has five lines in the entire movie. Only there to be Anne's love interest in the future.
Example 1 of a completely unnecessary scene: Gilbert pulls a girl's hair.
-Diana Barry and Josie Pye: their personalities can be summarized in this scene. Flat characters, just there to be Anne's best friend (Diana) and mock Anne (Josie).
-Rachel Lynde: is just there so she can insult Anne, then Anne insults her back and then Marilla makes Anne apologize to Rachel.
Example 3 of bad acting/directing: this entire scene is just weird acted and directed. The lines are delivered awkwardly, and their facial expressions are just...not it.
Example 4 of bad acting/directing: (this one is pretty self-explanatory)
Part 2: The Story.
Anne Shirley arrives by mistake to Green Gables, the siblings Matthew and Marilla wanted to adopt a boy but instead they got her.
The Cuthberts let Anne stay. Marilla sends a letter to the orphanage to find her a better family.
Her first night at Green Gables Anne has a nightmare, she doesn't want to go back to the orphanage.
(Example 5 of bad acting/directing: The direction decides to film the nightmares Anne has Dutch Tilted to make them scary because the script and directing can't do that)
Marilla shows her around the farm while Anne tells her about her past.
(Example 6 of bad acting/directing: cut screen time by mixing to different scenes. Also, the flashback... Weird choice of angle and also there's an added zoom-in to make the scene "scary" )
The Cuthberts give Anne a lot of dresses, which crashes with the plot that they're a simple family with not a lot of money.
Anne goes around town for a walk. (Example 2 of a completely unnecessary scene: the scene is only there to introduce these three characters)
Marilla loses her broach and blames Anne, and because of that she's not allowed to go to The Barry's picnic. Anne does go to the picnic at the end because Marilla finds the broach.
Anne goes to school and meets Gilbert, who pulls her plaits and calls her Carrots; Anne breaks her slate (apparently made of glass) on his head for what he did.
Even though Anne "hates" Gilbert she clearly has a crush on him (Examples: beginning of the last video and this video)
Gilbert decides to apologize to Anne while they're running in a field, but she doesn't accepts his apology. (Example 3 of a completely unnecessary scene)
Anne and Diana have tea. - The only scene a actually liked in the movie, they're being kids and it was entertaining to watch them act like adults (see I'm not just hating the movie. It has something good) -
Example 7 of bad acting/directing: The way the scene is filmed makes it seem like it's a parody movie (They messed up the only scene I was actually enjoying)
I forgot to say Diana got drunk because she drank too much "Cherry Cordial"
(random pic just because I wanted to put one)
Josie Pye challenges Anne to walk over thin ice. While Matthew was at home, he sensed something bad could happen and went to the lake.
Matthew gives Anne a puff-sleeved dress and she wears it to the Christmas Panto
Christmas Panto, where they sing silent night with candles like it's a vigil.
Marilla receives a response from the orphanage, they'd found Anne a good home. The Cuthberts decide to send Anne to this new family because they have more money than them.
Marilla is depressed because Anne is leaving.
And now the director gives a summary of the movie (if only I had known that before watching the whole thing). It's supposed to mean Anne is sad because she's leaving so she travels to the memory land.
Rachel convinces Marilla to keep Anne. The last scene is Anne before she goes to bed (and look she kinda has freckles now) .
Part 3: Directing Choices.
Some shots were the movie was trying to be aesthetic.
The entire movie is poorly directed, some shots were shot in very awkward angles (ex: the nightmare scene, Dutch Tilted works sometimes but in this case is a complete fail)
Another time the movie was trying to be aesthetic.
Part 4:Costumes and Set design
The sets are too perfect, which makes it less credible.
Sets part 2:
They spend their days sitting around in dirt and their costumes are always impeccable.
Part 5: Final Thoughts.
The movie, like I said multiple times, is poorly directed and acted. It's full of unnecessary scene and some scenes are longer than necessary too. I don't want to be mean or rude to the actors, but it's true.
Sometimes the director is not the one to blame, the script could be bad too, and if the script is bad then the work of the directors and the actors has to be stronger so they can create a good movie, which is not the case here.
I'd give this movie a 2/10 and I'm being nice.
[End Of Thread]
See you later for part two of this (Yes, there's three movies of this and I downloaded them all... I have nothing else to do, don't judge me)
