If there& #39;s something we do a lot over here, it is to boast with our past glories:
"Giant of Africa".
"Nigeria is rich".
However, the realities of the times show that we are now the world& #39;s poverty capital. Surely, there& #39;s nothing rich or giant about that.

The decision of successive governments to undermine our infrastructure and systems has given rise to a nation still caught in the vicious hand-to-mouth cycle of subsistence living.

Therefore, while other economies can successfully implement a national lockdown, we are finding it hard to cope with the consequences of not having just three of Nigeria& #39;s 36 states stay out of commission.

Over the past few days, we have been inundated with videos of Nigerians being harassed by their fellow citizens who, having seen their sources of livelihood cut off, have resorted to self-help. To put it in our local parlance, & #39;street don enter street& #39;.

And it will get worse unless something is done. The government& #39;s conditional cash transfer has been nothing more than an embarrassing charade, and the people are fed up.

It then begs the question: what is our strategy, really? You cannot tell a people dependent on daily income to stay at home for more than 2 weeks with no source of livelihood and no credible palliative. Our communities will be engulfed in turmoil.

We need a solution. Fast.
Seeing that the government has, on its own, flouted this lockdown (markets are open for a limited time daily) and there is little or no social distancing practised when the now-infamous palliative measures are distributed...

...I believe we should slightly modify the limited movement that the government has since allowed in this lockdown. Here are my thought (limited to Lagos):
1. For public transport, allow only the BRTs ply the road and, each, at half capacity.

2. Ensure and enforce a strict dress code for going out: face masks and gloves, to say the least. We can add long sleeves if we want to.
These are just two suggestions. We can add more. However, whatever happens, we must #RethinkTheLockdown. Or get ready for a showdown.
