On the wall of the classroom where I attend(ed) a dance exercise class is a poster of class Dos & Don’ts.

One of the best was
“Hear what I mean, not what I say.”

I think sometimes we put all the onus of communication on the speaker. Yes, clear & accurate communication is key,
But there is a responsibility from the listener too. To listen in good faith and understand what concept the speaker is conveying.

Know when and how to hold the speaker to their words and when not to be a pedantic know-it-all.

Also, while I am at it, we need to discuss how
Social media has nearly killed the concept of generalizations. Sometimes generalizations are okay when trying to communicate a point—and sometimes create humor.

Social media has exacerbated the need to point out every single exception when a generalization is made.
And sometimes when trying to craft a statement that makes a point — while also answering all the exceptions — just makes for a ponderous, unwieldy sentence.

Tl;dr
Speak well.
Listen graciously.
Don’t be a nit-picky jerkwad.
