I have seen discussion from R1 PIs about the impact of a lab shutdown on productivity but less from PUI. What if the summer was really the only time you did research? What if all the time you spent training the next crop during the last year was wasted? This is career ending.

I recently restarted my lab after a ~3 year shutdown. I am not going to do that again. Especially since the main complaint in one of my nsf reviews was publication record. I can’t go back in time and have students those years.
