My first peer-reviewed #SciPol publication is out in @SciPolJournal! It's about how state fellowships help scientists shape local policy. Shout-out to our awesome team: @MatSciMatt @DDaCrema1 @RB_Dudek @colemanrharris @clschuerger @melodytantx

THREAD: 1/
National #SciPol fellowships like @AAAS_STPF and @MirzayanFellow have existed for decades, but what about science policy at the state level? We wanted to explore how similar fellowships could be implemented in state governments so that scientists can influence policy locally. 2/
Since last July, we've been working on this project that spans five states: North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. NC and VA recently started fellowships ( @NCSTEMPolFellow and @COVES_Fellows). What can other states learn from their models? 3/
In our paper, we tell the story of how the NC and VA fellowships came to be, and how each government's unique structure and needs inform its fellowship's design. We then recommend ways that other states (OH/TN/TX) can apply these models when starting their own fellowships. 4/
We identify 3 key questions to consider in designing a state #SciPol fellowship:
1. What branch/office will host the fellows?
2. What will be the funding source for the fellowship?
3. How can fellows be most effective within the state's unique structure and session timeline?

It's been a busy few months of conference calls, writing, and editing, and I'm excited to share our final product! Thank you to @SciPolNetwork and @SciPolJournal for hosting this white paper track as part of the #2020ElectionInitiative!
