Last week the IAFF sent this email to local leaders about FEMA’s failure to secure, prioritize and deliver adequate PPE to fire departments. Despite daily assurances from FEMA, this critical gear is not reaching fire departments at the local level. (Thread)
Thousands of IAFF members have tested positive for the virus, three fire fighters have died in the line of duty as a result of COVID. More than 6,000 have been placed under quarantine and another 5,000 have been isolated. Having the correct PPE is essential. 2/
The answer is simple. FEMA MUST PRIORITIZE FIRE FIGHTERS AND EMS in the supply chain. Fire fighters are the first link in the public health system and it is imperative that FEMA treat the as such. Not only to protect fire fighters but to keep the public safe. 5/5.
Instead of sending supplies to hot spots across the country or other municipalities in low or short supply, FEMA is delivering supplies immediately to medical distributors for resale - those distributors are marking up supplies to unaffordable price levels for jurisdictions. 3/
Local IAFF leaders report that they are dangerously low on masks and other critical PPE. With some being forced to use expired masks and damaged gear. 4/
