Have you ever seen the words 'Viking' and 'manscaping' in the same sentence? It's not a joke, they loved combing their hair! https://twitter.com/EMidsVikings/status/1249658143245840385
For what it's worth, I looked up the word 'braid' once in the Old Norse dictionary and it's extremely rare
Ponytails were all the rage, though, maybe even twisted like a rope. Detail from the Stora Hammar picture stone no. 1 in Gotland, and Sigyn holding a cup over Loki on the Gosforth cross in Cumbria.
And ponytails with coils at the base. Detail from the Tjängvide picture stone in Gotland, a small figurine and a gullgubbe, both from Sweden.
These might have head coverings, it's hard to tell. Small Swedish figurine and figures from the Oseberg tapestry.
There's also this excellent little figurine from Hårby in Denmark.
I found this article, 'Viking Age Hair' by Elisabeth Arwill-Nordbladh, very helpful when researching my book, among other sources. https://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue42/6/8.cfm
