What I've gathered from the leaked Labour report seems to confirm what I've long felt about the antisemitism scandal:
1) the Lab Right deliberately stoked claims of AS for factional purposes; and then...
2) Many on the Left reacted in ways that gave credence to that narrative
Accusations of AS were always very obviously being used as a weapon against Corbyn's leadership. I had no idea there were people actually sabotaging the complaints process, but from the start the cynicism of this faction was clear to anyone who was paying attention
Naturally, there was a lot of frustration about this among Corbyn supporters. They could see that the claims made about them -gleefully being picked up by the media and the Tories- just didn't add up. The instinct was to call the whole thing a fabrication
However, there were cases trickling out into the media that looked genuine and apparently weren't being dealt with. Many Jewish figures & institutions started to loudly join in the attacks. (Confusingly, some also had factional motivations, but many were just genuinely concerned)
At this point, the conflict ceased to be primarily -or at least, most visibly- a factional one, & instead became framed as "Jews vs the Left". This was very convenient for the Lab Right & the Tories, as they could just watch from the sidelines & tut about "the Left's AS problem"
It was clear to most on the Left, including Corbyn, that escalating the conflict on these terms was a mistake. However, a loud minority of supporters leaned into it. For them, the primary enemy was no longer the "Blairites", but the "Zionists" - now seen to be behind every attack
They went into hyper-defensive mode, dismissing every accusation of AS against a leftist as a smear, even in quite obvious cases. Meanwhile, everyone who "gave in" to the smear campaign was seen as a sucker, if not a Zionist fifth columnist (including Corbyn allies)
This behaviour was naturally seen by most Jews as confirming their suspicions. The Labour Left's antisemitism crisis had become "real" as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Bridges were definitively burnt with Jewish communal institutions and most Jewish voters rejected the party
As I understand it, the report suggests that the Labour Left were correct that AS claims were being cynically used against them. But it also shows that pretty awful examples of AS (& other racism) in the Party were not being resolved. Both were right; and they blamed each other
In other words, the aims of the Right in turning the Left against itself, turning parts of the Left against Jews, and turning Jews against other minorities worked a treat. I am appalled by not surprised by how low they were willing to stoop
However, anyone saying this proves the whole thing was a "hoax" is completely missing the point. The report shows many Jews were right to have concerns, & were justified in being offended when these concerns were dismissed as Zionist smears
If this is your reaction, you were and still are part of the problem. And it suggests you'd probably fall into the same trap all over again
