The Mail on Sunday's resident GP, who previously was pushing for there not to be a shutdown (see quoted tweet that aged like sour milk) is now pushing for people to not wear masks.

At what point does this become medical/journalistic malpractice? This is staggeringly awful. https://twitter.com/dr_ellie/status/1238891087453925376
That fucking bucket of water video. The UK govt. reversed its death cult plans a couple of days later, but the sheer amount of smug armchair pundits pushing it around in that time while the experienceof Asia was ignored. And now they're repeating it with the issue of mask use.
I started my masks thread on the 2nd of March. HK had 98 cases, the UK just 36. Around the time of the bucket of water vid the UK was up to 1500 cases and 50 deaths. Today HK has 1000 cases and 4 deaths. The UK 1000 *deaths per day*.

Masks. Work. https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1237965916408664064?s=21 https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1237965916408664064
Imagine being so wrong speaking out against a lockdown, and now doubling down on negligence by speaking out against mask use. And using the platform of national newspaper to do so.
I'm resisting the urge to go through the replies of the bucket of water vid going "this aged well" to everyone patting themselves on the back about it. That would be gross and unhelpful, but I'm still human so it's tempting, but I'm not quite enough of an arsehole to do it.
The UK and US seem to have no organised plan yet beyond "stay home, save lives" in the short term. At some point society has to open up enough to function without it kicking off a huge wave of new deaths. Masks are one of the tools to make that possible.
It's clear that changing attitudes on their mass adoption is the new goal, if we want to save lives in countries unused to wearing them. The fact that we have people in positions of influence working against that, still, is going to make it so much harder.
"Stay home, save lives" was an essential first step. But if you need to go out, and at some point you do, what everyone needs to do now is make and wear a mask, normalise it, get society used to wearing them all the time outside as the done thing. We've done it here for 70+ days.
Stop waiting for those at the top to save us, start working from the ground up and build a community response. Every person who puts on a mask makes it more likely someone else will join in and also wear a mask. YOU can change other people's behaviour. https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1247027948525203456?s=21 https://twitter.com/hongkonghermit/status/1247027948525203456
