A lot of people don't think twice before blaming Asuu whenever there is a strike and its really not their fault. Asuu is not informing the public properly.
A number of these lecturers are not even enjoying the strike ..they are not getting paid! The problem here is the government and I will explain why
The government came up with a new salary structure called IPPIS which they are trying to force ASUU into without following due processes.
The IPPIS is what many of us don't understand here on social media and there is nobody to tell us more about. Let me just say a few things IPPIS holds as a new system.
1. IPPIS suggests that lecturers working years be reduced by 10 YEARS!.
In the Educational system Professors are given the privilege to retire at age 70 and those who are not able to reach that cadre 65. But IPPIS says they should retire at 60.
#ASUU
Which means most VCs, DVCs and other varsity ranking officials are not even expected to go back to their offices when its signed cause they are supposed to be retired.
2. IPPIS also suggests that lecturers who go on sabbatical leave don't get paid of course they did it last year ..so it's as good as there is no more sabbatical leave for them. Including external examination which Professors do.
#ASUU
And these things are not bad. They are only little benefits in the educational system lectures do enjoy.
3. We all know lecturers are not paid well in the country. IPPIS as a new salary structure reduces their salaries instead of maintaining it or increasing it. Your average varsity Professor earns like 500k or less..this is someone that has reached the apex of his career
Yet FG still plans on reducing it. This government only wants to intimidate these lecturers
Knowing fully well that Asuu is a strong association and doesn't just say oh yes to everything the govt says ..they forcefully sized their salaries unexpectedly on Feb which has lasted till now.
And even when Asuu went on a warning strike cause their salaries were sized the Federal government still refused to negotiate with them or pay them..The government only said NO IPPIS NO NEGOTIATIONS.
Meanwhile the Non Academic Staff Union(NASU) that signed into IPPIS are regretting it after experiencing a lot of salary reduction.
Can you imagine a registra in a university (one of the top 5 figures) lost 200k in her salary after signing that..that one I can't even explain.
These are just very few things I decided to point out for now. The government knows Asuu will not accept that...let FG tell us why they are forcing Asuu into all these. Seizing their salaries even in lockdown.
The government always knew that this would result in a strike and a very long one I guess yet they didn't want to consider Nigerians
The government is still owing Asuu a lot ..including arrears. And did I forget something?..The IPPIS also doesn't recognize payment of promotion arrears.
It is very wrong for a government to seize peoples salaries unexpectedly in the bid to force them into signing something that wont benefit the people rather the government.
