The inaugural Asia Cup was held in #Sharjah in April 1984 between India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

It was the first time that a multi-nation cricket tournament was held in UAE. It was also the first time that natural wickets were introduced at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
About 6 months before this event, Asian Cricket Conference was held in New Delhi, which finalized the nitti gritty of this tournament.

Seen in this pic, amongst others, are NKP Salve and Kanmadikar
Kapil Dev opted out, to rest his knee. Gavaskar was back as captain, with @MadanLal1983 as his deputy. India fielded a fairly young team with Maninder, Prabhakar, @chetans1987 , Raju Kulkarni and Gulam Parkar
The Cricketers Benefit Fund Series (CBFS) which was in-charge of organising the Asia Ciup was established in 1981 by Abdul Rahman Bukhatir. They had been honouring cricketers of the past & present from India and Pakistan, with benefit purses in recognition of their services
The 1981 beneficiaries were Madhav Mantri, Asif Iqbal and the original little master, Hannif Mohammad.

Gavaskar, Intikhab Alam, Nazar Mohammad (Pak's 1st test centurion) and Subhash Gupte in 1982

Gundappa Vishwanath, Zaheer Abbas, Alimuddin and Ramakant Desai in 1983 (pic)
The 1984 beneficiaries were @BishanBedi , world's best left arm spinner and India's highest wicket taker then, "Mr Six" Salim Durrani (son of Abdul Aziz, who later coached Hanif Mohammad), Imran Khan, one of the game's leading all rounders and "Merry Max" Maqsood Ahmed
Digressing a bit for Merry Max Maqsood Ahmed. This Pakistani batsman had such a cavalier attitude that he was out for 99 (1st Pak batsman to be out on 99), stumped off Gupte, in 3rd test agst India in 52/53 series. The news was too much to bear for a fan who died of heart attack
Which brings us back to the main purpose of this thread.

A commemorative issue on this Asia Cup has Gavaskar and Asif Iqbal writing on Imran Khan, Raj Singh Dungarpur on Salim Durrani and Waqar Hasan on Merry Max Maqsood Ahmed.
But the thing that caught my eye and what makes this issue truly memorable are the articles by Sir Don Bradman, Vijay Merchant and Mushtaq Mohammad on @BishanBedi
