Movie and history fans, this one's for all of you!

Most people think that Dhundiraj Govind Phalke was the first one in 1913, but some others say that it was actually Ramachandra Gopal Torne before him in 1912.

What do you think I am talking about?
Dhundiraj Govind "Dadasaheb" Phalke released what most people consider the first Indian film, Raja Harishchandra" in 1913.

He is known as the Father of Indian cinema and. The award outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema is named after him.
Ramachandra Gopal Torne, also known as "Dadasaheb" Torne (easy to remember in case it shows up in a quiz question ya?👌🏽) is considered to be the Father of Indian Cinema.

Born on 13th April 1890, today is his 130th birth anniversary.
Torne's film, Shree Pundalik was released in 1912 a year before Phalke released Raja Harishchandra.

Why isn't Shree Pundalik considered the first Indian movie?
The movie is based on a Marathi play, has no lines and was silent.

It was initially shot in a single take and shot by Johnsnon, an English camera man.
Torne was like, "maza nahi aaya bhai" (in Marathi) and decided to shoot the play in parts and splice scenes together after editing them.

The negatives of the 22 minute film were sent to London for processing.
The movie had three strikes against it - it was a televised play, it was processed in London and the cameraman was an Englishman.

For these three reasons, Shree Pundalik isn't considered the first Indian movie.
And that, dear friends, is why we have the Dadasaheb Phalke award instead of the Dadasaheb Torne award.

@RajaSen @baradwajrangan @anupamachopra @jaiarjun @RajeevMasand - does any of you know more about Torne and Shree Pundalik or know historians who can tell us more?
