Inspired by a thread by @E_VonH_ here’s a small list by my favourite musical pieces from Korea. I’m not into Korean pop or kpop exp for @BTS_twt but I love traditional and fusion styles. Starting from famous Seoul subway fusion song.
And here’s gayagum piece as I’m totally in love with that instrument. It’s insanely hard to play it (I tried it in Seoul actually) but the sound is so incredible. I’ve got a CD at home and I think it’s this musician but I’m not sure.
As I’m always in for experiments, another fusion here. Beatbox with gayagum version of Pachelbel’s Cannon in D.
When it comes to Korean music, never forget about Arirang. There are thousands of versions of this ancient song and both Koreas have listed it in UNESCO. I like @BTS_twt version of course but other I guess the most common concept is this
Pungmul is another thing I like. Actually, I wasn’t all that interested until I saw it live in Busan. Ever since I’m hooked. The dancers can go on for long time actually, always synchronising to their rhythm patterns and they’re so precise and energetic!
Here’s another performance with percussions, I assume it’s practice for pungmul but only the music (I’m not an expert so I’m not always sure what it is), this one is better if you want to pick up (presumably) improvised rhythm pattern changes.
Speaking about percussions, I haven’t found any purely janggu (hourglass drum) performance but it is used in trot apparently. Trot is a mysterious genre to me but it’s somehow so fun. It’s not traditional in its usual connotation but I think it’s folk too
The trot video is long but this traditional song is not so maybe you want to check this. I don’t know what it is, it simply ended up in my collection. The string instrument is haegum
And I’ll finish with two more songs. This is calming fusion song. Again, as with most videos on Gugak TV, I’ve no idea what it is.
And to end on a little bit ear worm note, nursery song which was introduced to me by Jimin and it never left me. A curse actually. That sad, I actually like the song 😂 even if it’s eating my brain.
A note - I’m not into kpop and Korean pop that much. I do like some songs. And I respect all the artists there, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that it doesn’t speak to me usually. I thought I should make that clear because I’ve been around kpop and Korean pop for ten years.
