It was the umpteenth time he was seeing me that day

First, at 7am that morning, I had been going in & out of the ward since then & this was 8pm already

I was stressed to the bone. I guess he saw the expression I tried so hard to mask

He asked; 'Dr, are you not going home? Like when are you closing?"

I smiled cause at least, it was the first time that day someone had noticed I had been working all day.

I explained how we didn't have the luxury of closing on some days.
He was polite & even offered to take care of dinner but I declined. Afterall, I was just doing my job

The moment you're about to sit, you're called back to walking, working, thinking &making difficult decisions.

This happens more times than people know
24 hr shifts, 48 hrs sometimes

When a team is short staffed which is mostly the case, some have had to work 72hrs. Yes

The nurses aren't left out. Rewind to 2weeks before this, I was in the neonatal care unit.
Those nurses develop back pain standing long hours painstakingly caring for the babies with a goal to reunite them with their parents as quickly a possible.

They have to pop painkillers while on a shift sometimes
The med lab scientists? You think since you don't see them, then they are lounging? Oh naa

Those guys work to meet up with the deadlines for emergency blood results, the need for immediate transfusions and more.

The Cleaners, healthcare assistants, security
The stress levels are already things a lot of them try not to talk about

A number of times, I have tried to fake a smile after working 24hrs the previous day, had an hour of break and had to resume again that morning for another 9 more hours
These are the things HCWs do daily

So Sir, @DrEOEhanire ,just to be clear, no health worker checks just temperature.

Now, these same people are faced with a pandemic and all we as your contribution @Fmohnigeria is NOT to come replace us at the war front
We only ask for a few things money can buy

- Proper&adequate PPEs ; yes including something like what we have been seeing our house of Rep. members wearing on TV(it's actually meant for health workers)

- Better hazard allowance

- Health & Life Insurance
We can begin with these...but ultimately we actually want an overhaul of our health system.

No more inadequacies in our health facilities

No more leaving health workers without tools

Health care should be prioritized, not politicized

Health workers are not magicians that can work by spinning a wand. They need the right tools

They are not lambs to be sacrificed.

They have loved ones who want them home in one piece when this is over.
