I know I keep saying this but — my mum works in a care home, and they have no PPE beyond plastic aprons. How more staff and patients haven’t already been infected is a mystery to me. https://twitter.com/peston/status/1249421138133999618
The CQC monitors care homes — the government has a list of all of them. Coronavirus seems disproportionately deadly for older people, and those who care for multiple people with the illness seem to get sicker. So care homes should always have been a priority.
One thing my mum did say is that there’s understandably a lot of concern from relatives now about people dying alone in care homes as there are no visitors allowed. But they don’t abandon the dying, and people aren’t left alone and scared. Care workers care for their patients.
Maybe, since they are literally risking their health to do their job, we could think about paying them a bit more than minimum wage in the future.
