The Labour leaks reveal something important: the real power in Labour is not elected. Like the state itself: power is not in elected bodies but the bureaucracy. In the state that’s the civil service, banks, military, corporations; In Labour it’s the HQ and administrative staff.
Corbyn was elected leader but his power was remarkably little. The same could be said if he was elected PM, despite holding office he‘d have the civil service, military, banks & corporations working against him. Just like the agents of capital worked against him inside Labour.
The real truth is Labour isn’t a democratic party. The ordinary labour member has almost no power despite all the guff we are told about CLP meetings. Conference is mostly a rubber stamping event. All the power in Labour is in unelected or four times-removed delegated bodies.
If every labour member stopped going to CLP meetings the party would just roll on. The average member is needed only as an unpaid postman. The real power in Labour is not the rank and file but the ‘officer’ class (literally those in Labour offices). They have all the power.
