One of the shittiest things about the way this lockdown is being regulated, other than the obvious systemic racism within the institutions doing the regulating, is how it disempowers communities, rather than facilitating avenues for us to help one another.
So many of us have certain privileges and resources other people need right now, but there are so few real opportunities to pass them on, or clear guidance on how we might do so without running into legal issues or endangering the communities we're trying to help.
Not-for-profits are collapsing all over because donations are drying up, there is an army of people stuck at home able and willing to put in some work, it feels like there are a lot of opportunities our leaders - even at a community level - are overlooking.
Quarantine doesn't mean life stops. We can utilise this time, but it shouldn't be individuals trying to interpret health directives to see if they can donate food to a refugee family. It should be councils & governments organising a redistribution of resources in safe ways.
And yes I wrote 'redistribution of resources', I've gone full Marxist, or, as I prefer to call it, full Britney.
And to be clear I think we should all stay home, absolutely, quarantine is essential. I'm talking about creating policies and strategies that enable and facilitate us in providing safe care to the vulnerable rn at a community level rather than an individual level.
And I really think opening such avenues will help keep quarantine going, and keep us healthy. People get restless if they don't have purpose. We have the technology, the opportunity, and a great deal of time. Give us purpose.
