I'm going to tweet out my top 10 favorite commercials. It's going to be like I love the 90s, but for commercials. Here it goes...
I dunno, #lockdownprojects #advertising #mediacriticism
#10: Pepsi - MC Hammer drinks a Coke.
It's funny that after Hammer drinks a Coke, there's a slight pained look on his face. Also, how does the kid in the front row of a Hammer concert have a full, unlidded cup of Pepsi?
#9: BIll & Ted's Excellent Cereal
A 30 second history lesson. The jingle at the end of this commercial still pops into my mind regularly.
#8 Crossfire
The future is now, disembodied deep voice announcer guy. Note the epic slappy bassline. I'll bet @Davie504bass can't play it!
#7 Fruity Pebbles
While I could have picked any of the multitude of Fruity Pebbles commercials that are still airing today, This one stands out as an illustration of rap & hiphop market penetration in the early 90s. That beat? 84 bpm.
#6 Bubbletape
Combines grungy jams, wild Memphis design interpretations, and the required anti-authoritarianism of the early to mid 90s. I consider this commercial a 30 second missing link between the 80s and the grunge era.
#5
I'm starting to hear myself as Casey Kasem. Not sure if this was from the 90s, but its haunting refrain portends 9 chasms of acrid fire in the near future, each more horrifying than the one before. And then there's kid sister. Wasn't much into that one.
#4 GI Joe
When someone uses the cliche "x on steroids," it's usually a metaphor to emphasize something's strength or power. I think this particular GI Joe commercial, had to have shot up with something anabolic. There is no other explanation.
This thread was mostly composed to develop sympathy for people who are forced to write listicles for a living. And with that, I bring you to the top 3. As if it were special.
#3 Toxic Crusaders
Back in the 90s, there was big money in climate change messaging, as evidenced by this cartoon. Either that, or the companies that produced them could write it off as educational per the Children's Television Act. HM: Captain Planet.
