Affiliate Marketing on Twitter Tips: For Creators [Part 2]

In the last thread, I focused on helping your affiliates by providing tools for them to win.

While I will add more on that, this thread is primarily focused on the creators (especially those who sell digital products on Gumroad).
1. Quality Affiliates

If you want quality affiliates who are going to help sell your products, they need to have consumed the product.

What does this mean for you?

If they haven't bought the product, don't add them as an affiliate - you can, however send a free copy
If they haven't seen the product, how can they properly advertise it for you?

What if a potential customer has a question that only someone who's seen the product can answer?

What if the affiliate is OVERSELLING the product?
Not only do unaware affiliates hurt potential sales, they can be the cause of refund requests and charge-backs.

Depending on your product, I would take things a step further.

"Only allow those who've consumed your product and seen results from it affiliate for you."
Think of your affiliates as spokespersons for your brand.

Do you not want someone who can give a personal testimonial about their life before and after your amazing product?

What sounds better to you?

"it's a great book"

or

"this book changed my life..."
Some products may not require this.

If you have a fiction book about dragons, that may not fit the bill.

But if you are selling something solution based (make money, achieve a goal, etc.) you need affiliates who can testify your product's greatness.
[For Affiliates]

While creators and affiliate programs will allow you to become an affiliate, you should buy the product.

In most cases, you can make the money back in 2-4 affiliate sales.

After purchasing the content, consume it and use it to get success.

Now you can sell
2. Affiliate Application

While a lot of people are okay with adding affiliates via DM request, you can (and should) make this easier for you.

Create an application so people can apply to become an affiliate.

3. Affiliate Guidelines

As the creator, you are responsible for how your brand is displayed.

It's seems that recently, more and more people have began affiliate marketing on Twitter. While it's great that people are taking on new opportunities, you need to set rules.
Before or after adding the affiliate, send over your guidelines and expectations.

Have them acknowledge your guidelines.

What guidelines should you have for your affiliates?

The following are examples
- No spamming their affiliate link under other people's post

Not only do people consider this to be spammy, potential customers may consider the product to be spammy to.

*Put a rule in place that automatically cancels the affiliate opportunity if this happens.
- No over-promising when promoting the product.

Yes, your affiliates may lie to get more affiliate sales.

*immediate disqualification
- No affiliate sales in the first 30/60/90 days, deleted as an affiliate.

Even amazon does this.

If you are going to give out an opportunity, make sure people are taking action.
- Failure to disclose affiliate status when promoting products.

The FTC will take care of this.
4. Advising your affiliates

If you want your affiliates to win (you winning as a result) they need your help.

Don't expect your affiliates to start earning big bucks after getting your affiliate link. Help them.
If the affiliate is new, they won't know what they are doing.

Record a webinar showing them the options they have with affiliate marketing. Sure they can google, but this is your product.

What kind of options? email, blogs, YouTube, LinkedIn, Facebook, in-person, etc.
While this thread is focused on affiliating on Twitter, show them that it's possible to do this on other platforms (this will depend on your product).

While platforms like Instagram and Youtube may take time to build an audience, Facebook always has someone willing to listen.
[For Affiliates]

Please know that sales is a numbers game.

I know some of you are on day ONE and are already contemplating quitting.

Learn what a conversion rate is - YouTube is your friend.
You need link clicks to get sales.

IF NO ONE CLICKS ON YOUR AFFILIATE LINK YOU WILL NOT GET SALES

There's a lesson in there somewhere.
If you are starting this on Twitter, which in my opinion is a good place to start, understand that you need to have a following to promote to.

A following that you've built some trust to.

Do not lose this trust by promoting low quality products to get a commission.
If you are looking to grow your Twitter account, be yourself and be social.

That alone will take you a long way.

If you are looking for some guide to help you, cool - they work too.

Here are a couple to check out if you like (these are affiliate links).
Make it Stick by @CMillerTalks

His guide focuses on writing high quality tweets to get engagements. Writing good content is critical to building a following. No, this isn't about writing platitudes, it's about writing thoughtfully. https://gumroad.com/a/115242099
Remember

You are not a walking advertisement.

Yes, you should shamelessly promote your products - and those you love.

But your followers are there for you - not your affiliate links.

Calm down a bit. Create a linktree or carrd for your bio (see mine)
You don't need to promote 48 products.

Find one good product, use it, and share your experiences with your audience.

That one product will help you more than promoting lots of products you have no idea about.

Quality over Quantity.
Test, test, test.

If you are new to this, you probably don't know how to write a good promotional tweet. You need practice.

Read a copywriting book if needed (Cashvertising)

Then, test your promotional tweets. You can tell which tweets perform better than others.

Practice
