Can we just stop having celebrities altogether because we won't be gathering in large numbers at movie theaters or rock concerts so can that just kill the entire industry and make all creative work amateur collaboration from now on?
Imagine if that really happened though. What if music became something we all compose and share with our friends and what if we entertained each other with skits we created on our iPhones instead of sitting vacuously in front of screens all day?
It's already kind of partly happening (e.g. Vine, SnapChat, TikTok, etc). I would just love it if Hollywood and the RCIA went down in flames, taking down every other boundary between celebrity and audience and everyone just became co-creators together.
My life trying to be a progressive Christian celebrity was a miserable failure. I put the rage to good use in my poetry. But now that I'm starting not to care about building a platform, there's so much more joy in my life.
So how about we just overthrow celebrity culture altogether? Don't be deferential or transactional with anyone; don't ghost people who are beneath you on the social ladder; just co-create with others in whatever ways fit your skills and your bandwidth.
