The US, Canada, and Mexico should join into an economic union similar to the EU's initial mandate with the goal of eventually bringing central and South America in as well. Encourage bringing consumer protection and environmental protections into alignment + free trade/movement.
We should immediately end all spending on the war on drugs at home and abroad and begin the process of decriminalizing all drugs, redirecting those funds into health and social services programs designed to address the underlying causes of addiction.
Not only would this dramatically reduce violence on the streets over time, it would cut funding from the cartels and reduce violence abroad, eliminating one of the biggest drivers of traumatic mass migration in the western hemisphere.
The CDC needs to be more insulated from the whims of the executive branch. If it cannot be an independent, science-driven voice to protect the public then its usefulness is eroded.
ICE is not salvageable as an agency. I am not convinced DHS is either. At the very least the latter needs deep institutional reform and a much more limited mandate.
Reducing the impact of lobbying on legislation is one of the most pressing political issues of this political moment and nobody has a serious proposal for how to deal with it. Our republic cannot continue to function if their influence continues unabated.
