My grandpa Deragisch ( @bderagisch& #39;s dad) worked for the post office carrying mail in St. Paul MN for almost 25 years from ~1928-1952. He was the president of the postal workers union and quit bc he promised he would if congress didn& #39;t raise their wages.
Even though he didn& #39;t have any influence over congress, he was mad that congress let them down. Later that summer in Aug. my dad& #39;s 3rd brother was born, my gpa& #39;s mom died in Sept, and then they moved to CA on New Year& #39;s Day 1953. My dad was born in CA a couple years later.
They weren& #39;t rich by any stretch, but working for the USPS was something he had a lot of pride in and that supported his family (my grandma and 3 kids at the time). He carried mail in downtown St. Paul. They delivered 2 times a day, 6 days a week. Imagine those cold MN winters!https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ„¶" title="Cold face" aria-label="Emoji: Cold face">
My dad said he liked working in the rich neighborhoods because they gave the best Christmas gifts https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😆" title="Smiling face with open mouth and tightly-closed eyes" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face with open mouth and tightly-closed eyes">
Anyway, he was an amazing guy... and I wish I could have asked him about what it was like (he passed when I was a kid before I had a chance to really know him). His story isn& #39;t unique though- we have to save the USPS!!
It is an institution that has brought so many families into the middle class because of its workforce, delivers to every town in the nation, is vital to a working economy. I can& #39;t imagine not having it in pursuit of "profit"- Buy stamps! Call your representatives! #SaveTheUSPS!
