why marvel is gonna continue to flourish and thrive, and SW is going to slowly fade into obscurity // a thread
the MCU fanbase grows and changes rapidly. so what does marvel do in response? they grow and change with it. when perlmutter was stopping the brand from growing and diversifying, they got rid of him. they came out with captain marvel, and black panther.
and when captain marvel got awful backlash from certain fans, they didn’t bend to it. they kept her as her awesome self in endgame, and greenlit a captain marvel 2. despite obnoxious “true fans” whining and wailing, we’re getting a captain marvel two, a miss marvel movie...
and black panther 2. because rather than holding onto their old “true fanbase” as hard as possible, marvel grows with the new generations and groups of fans that it inspires. that’s why black panther became the massive hit that it is.
that’s why endgame is one of the highest grossing movie of all time. marvel doesn’t grip onto old storylines for dear life, and fear new territory and the possibility of alienating the “original” fans. they welcome new generations, and evolve with them.
LFL does not do that. they refuse to change with their fanbase and audience. the ST was created to inspire a new generation of fans, and with the first two, it did. but IX spit on those new fans, and dedicated itself to pleasing the “true” fans, who only care about the OT.
IX was barely even about the new characters, and their journeys and battles. it was mostly about the OT. LFL clearly thought that this would bring in the big bucks, but it didn’t. they were hoping that this movie would make close to endgame numbers. instead, it only made...
2M more than rogue one. and domestically, it made less than all of the other saga movies (except for AOTC). that’s because the fans that they’re so scared to lose? they’re getting older. they have families and jobs and things to care about other than a trilogy that
and believe it or not, the ST did indeed inspire a new, desperately needed generation of star wars fans. just look at ao3, tiktok, tumblr, and twitter. look at how young the majority of attendees of SWC tend to be. marvel recognized that their fanbase was growing and...
changing, and they evolved along with it, to major success. LFL refuses to do the same, instead clinging to their “real fans” of old. that is not sustainable. hell, what was the point of an ST if you were gonna decide that you don’t want a new generation of fans after all?
when TLJ got amazing reviews from the GA and critics, but was trashed by the “true fans”, the same ones who bashed captain marvel and black panther, what did LFL do? did they stand their ground like marvel did, to great success?
of course not. instead, they created what was basically an apology movie to those “true fans”. they bent to them, instead of evolving...
with the growing fanbase and audience and critics who actually loved the direction they were going in. and that failed. because guess what? there’s more active new generation fans than there are older fans. and we’re the ones willing to spend the money.
LFL needs to pull a marvel, and fast. they need to evolve with their fanbase, and with their audience. if they don’t? as the years go by, and the “true fans” get even older, they will slowly lose their fanbase and audience, and fade into obscurity.
