We've been going out our front door so little that for the first time since we've lived here birds are building nests on our porch light! Mama Robin has been pushing out an egg a day this weekend. Wonder if she stops at 2 or goes bonkers with 5? Stay tuned!
Update on the egg situation. Mama Robin wasn't done! Did some reading last night and apparently they can lay 2-6 eggs!
Update: Mama Robin stopped at laying three, and is currently hard at work converting blue eggs into baby robins. In 9 to 11 days we should start hatching! I can /just/ see her nesting through the door window..
As prophesied by Wikipedia, we have newly hatched babies! Warning, if you've never seen baby birds before, they start off hideous before they get cute.
Daily baby update: still pretty freaky
Mom and dad are just non-stop bringing food to feed these babies. I took advantage of a brief lull in the airlift to snap the pics of the day. Somehow I think they got more hideous overnight.
These guys may be essentially bird larva right NOW, but in about 11 days these guys are going to leave the nest flying and never return. Absolutely wild.
Early baby bird update: looking much more bird like this morning. Fuzz starting to really come in nicely.
Also, confession: on the first day of their hatching, one fell out of the nest. Upon discovery, they were cold to the touch, but still feebly moving. I put them back in the nest and didn't say anything to y'all because I was afraid it would die. Nope! First unalloyed good of 2020
Baby bird update: still not cute. Might have gone backwards since yesterday? Haha, they're going to get there, I just know it!
Daily update: DINO BABIES!!
Important bonus update, they do this now when you walk past the door...
Sleepy bird baby update. Also, happened to see a new neighbor in our front tree. Kinda tough spot, but she's up there! Anyone know what kind? Some sort of dove, maybe?
Dual-angle bird update: very fuzzy, almost fully opened eyes, looking very bird like and not so much alien at this point. Getting very big!
Update: One of these little guys is a lot more skeptical on the question of "is this camera my mom?" than their siblings. Must be the oldest...
Daily update: where did all these feathers come from? Can you believe they're only 5-6 days from leaving the nest? Guess they are getting crowded in there!
Your daily birds... They grow up so fast!
Bonus stealth night nest update! I think robins are blind at night. She has none of my shit during daylight hours, but sun goes down and she's like eh, whatever. Take your damn pictures.
Daily update: just a pile of birds. Approaching maximum cute.
HUGE BIRD UPDATE: baby one has left the nest! Spread your wings and fly, little dude. May you avoid the neighborhood cats until you are just a wee bit stouter.
And they can get back on the porch any time they want, too, no problem. Watching this guy fly is like real like Angry Birds, just a round mound of gravity rebound.
Fin.
