Jalen Reagor TCU. His speed, explosiveness and open field running are hilariously good. But they're no joke. The agility and quickness are devastating.
This kind of performance versus a defense like Ohio State, is pretty incredible. Against quality coverage, in a contested situation Reagor maintains speed & stride on a knife edge at the boundary, staying upright for a couple of extra yards versus good coverage from Damon Arnette
More high level opposition. Oklahoma Corner Parnell Motley in coverage here. Does all the right things, amazingly stays in his hip pocket right up until the ball is arriving, and with a subtle, nifty little shove Reagor "separates" (inches) to make a clean catch and score.
Here is the same matchup vs Motley a year apart, with the same move at the catchpoint and the same result. He is so nifty at last minute seperation. If he can be crafty enough he can use this in the NFL.
This on a hail Mary.
If you understand nothing else about Reagor, then know this. In Pads, he is right up there with Ruggs in terms of game speed. This 12 yard cushion disappears so quickly and is obliterated. Reagor seems to keep accelerating away with each stride. This kind of speed changes games.
The speed is also special enough that he can pick himself off of the floor and chase down the DB that stole his ball. Real football player effort and resilience to live in the moment rather than wallow in his misfortune. Heads up and high character stuff.
Reagor, the athlete has incredible vertical leap ability both angles show how ridiculously explosive he is at the catchpoint. The physical traits here are undeniable and point to a truly special physical ceiling.
Unsurprisingly Reagor is a good contested catch player too, with excellent body control and strength to survive contact, and get boundary awareness to come down in bounds.
All that explosion is special, combined with his lateral agility, balance and vision means that he is capable of some truly special plays. It's rare to see this kind of incredible, creative, athletic magical play. He is a truly special prospect at the position.
Reagor has decent, functional route running skills, but with refinement and development he could be made even more lethal as a receiver. His break here is very deliberate and a little slow. Being able to snap the route off more suddenly and in fewer steps will help vs NFL DB's.
By contrast, Routes that involve a more gradual change of direction are far more devastating. This is an interesting variation on the dig route. A sort of Post/Dig route. And with each stage of it Reagor's unique speed creates real meaningful seperation.
Back again to the Ohio State State matchup. This is Reagor blocking at the POA on this jet sweep. This is an Arse-Kicking block that all about making a statement to the opponent. Engaging and driving him backwards before unceremoniously tossing him aside.
It should also be no surprise that Reagor is a prodigious kick returned who has endless highlights of explosive returns like this. His value is exponentially increased as an elite level return specialist.
Reagor suffered a drop in production in 2019 due to some horrendous QB play. Per PFF only 30.7% of the targets thrown his way, were charged as accurate. As a result he hauled in 43 of 88 targets for 611 yds. Having said that, for a player as remarkably gifted as Reagor.....
There is an inconsistent level of production over the last 3 years that gives me pause for concern. HOWEVER. Reagor is so tantalising that the potential would be too much to bear if he were to be there in Round 2. There are a lot of teams who would consider a high 2nd good value.
I hope Reagor gets the offense and coaching he deserves to maximise his unique ability because the ceiling is really something. He is the kind of player that Andy Reid or Sean Payton could turn into a superstar in year one based on traits alone.
