Hop (2011) is a story about the white establishment reasserting themselves against the working class - a thread:
so let’s start by establishing the status quo at the start of Hop. E.B. is to inherit his dad’s title of the Easter Bunny, suggesting Easter Island operates as an absolute monarchy - a classic undemocratic, system of nepotism. sounds like the establishment to me 👀
there is also clear social injustice within the Hop Cinematic Universe with a class system where bunny>chicks.
not only can only bunnies be the easter bunny, but also bunnies are given the best jobs! whilst the chicks are only shown working average factory jobs (low paid work!!), bunnies are shown operating in the higher positions in the factory AND the pink berets are SOLEY bunnies!
even in the easter operation the chicks are forced to undertake the STRENUOUS labour of flying the sleigh whilst the bunnies merely have to drop the eggs about !!!
when carlos starts his coup d’etat he gathers all the chicks together in an act of SOCIAL UNITY resembling a union! carlos isn’t relevant enough to persuade ALL the chicks to join him, suggesting the chicks themselves ARE unsatisfied with their social positions.
E.B.’s dad literally tells carlos ‘a chick delivering easter, that’s ridiculous’ mirroring language used by rich caucasian men towards women, poc and the working class
speaking of which, let’s discuss the casting of characters by the producers of Hop. The Easter Bunny is voiced by Hugh Laurie, giving him a white, British accent typically associated with the ruling class
E.B. himself meanwhile is voiced by Russell Brand, giving him an Essex accent, despite literally growing up with his posh ass dad. (kinda like posh girls using ldn slang at uni 😳) E.B. is given a more approachable accent but he still is brought up in a life of PRIVILEGE
Similarly, Fred is a caucasian American male who is from a wealthy enough family that he can live off his parents for the first c.25-29 years of his life!! literally the embodiment of white privilege.
MEANWHILE the primary chick of the film is literally named ‘Carlos’ and judging by Hank Azaria’s voicing of him is Mexican. THE PARALLELS BETWEEN WHITE BRITS AND AMERICANS V THEIR IMMIGRANT COUNTERPARTS IS UNCANNY
of course the heroes of the film are white and carlos the ‘villain’ of the film is latino. the only other obvious poc in the film is fred’s sister Alex who is portrayed as obnoxious and flops her song in the school recital 👀
now. i’m aware that carlos himself is a controversial figure here, as he does almost ruin easter. but I ask you to consider this: what leader of a revolution doesn’t become eventually obsessed by power? the coup of the chicks parallels many historic coups !! carlos isn’t unique !
a clear example of this is in when carlos transforms into a hybrid bunny - literally becoming part of the establishment he protests against!! sound familiar 👀 think of napoleon beginning to operate like a monarch or even the end of animal farm where the animals act like humans
of course, like many revolutions, the chicks’ coup is defeated and by the end of the film E.B. and Fred are co-Easter Bunnies. this is problematic for many reasons:
FIRSTLY E.B. LITERALLY SAYS HE DOESN’T WANT TO END UP THE EASTER BUNNY BUT LOOK AT HIM NOW. did someone say corporate sell out?
meanwhile Fred (🤮) literally is the most UNQUALIFIED person to become the Easter Bunny. Whilst Carlos has spent YEARS grafting in the factory, Fred literally hasn’t had a job and flops his video game interview.
(yes he can hurdle with egg baskets and paint eggs but not sure the easter bunny acc has to do that? is the job not more to do with management. Fred doesn’t exactly scream LEADER to me. carlos however ...)
also E.B’s dad legit tells carlos that ‘the egg of destiny is too dangerous for a chick, it’s power can only be yielded by a bunny’ yet FRED a HUMAN can become the easter bunny ?! sounds qwhite suspicious to me...
so by the end of Hop (2011) the white ruling class reassert themselves. E.B. seemingly abandons the arts for the corporate world, whilst the chicks are given no more rights, leaving Easter Island just as autocratic as we find it at the start of the film.
in conclusion, carlos was a victim and Fred deserves literal electric chair
