RETRAIN YOUR BRAIN FROM NEGATIVE THOUGHTS

Times of crisis is the best time to retrain your brain. Why?

Because you dont have any other choice than to change the way you look at things, or suffer.

I'd like to share a form of therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
CBT is a form of therapy where you train your thought process to interpret situations better. Our cognitive affect our feelings and emotions.

When you go to a therapist, they usually use CBT. But you can also DIY by teaching yourself to realign your negative thoughts.
The truth is, our emotions; how we feel about something is affected by how we perceive and interpret events.

Ever wondered why some kids who come out of adverse situations of poverty, death, and hardship grow up to be strong-willed?

Its the way they train their brain.
Case: i think everyone has had some degree of anxiety when learning to drive. But the more you drive, the more confident you become at driving.

Why? Because you collect data and observation as you drive. And more data to show that "hey, this driving thing is not so scary at all"
With more exposure, you start to convince your brain to associate driving as something positive instead of scary.

That is one way you retrain your brain.

But truth is, there is a lot of positivity amidst any crisis. You just have change the way your thought operates.
Say you are stranded in an IPTA now, and you feel stressed, lonely, trapped.

You can either:
A) Convince yourself this is the worst thing that could happen to you.
Or
B) Remind yourself that you are safe, you have all your needs and people care for you.
"A" would lead you to feel more depressed, more lonely, while "B" would make you calm and opportunistic.

Some great scholars are born in times of isolation and imprisonment. Why? Because they have learned to control their thoughts so adversity would lead to opportunity.
Here's a case from the story of our prophet:

When prophet Muhammad SAW was down after not receiving revelation for a while and hence being mocked by quraisy, Allah sent down surah ad-dhuha.
The surah entails a few points:
1. Akhirah is better (change perspective on the current world)
2. Prophet was a lonely orphan, was lost, and poor (reminds him that he is now in much better condition)
3. Reminds prophet to be kind to others, regardless his current emotional state.
This is a great application of CBT demonstrated in Allah's verses to comfort his messenger. It is a way to reverse the negative thoughts that the prophet had on himself and thus, making him feel better about himself and the situation he is facing.
I hope everyone is using this time of containment and isolation positively. Use tech to communicate and rekindle relationships.

We may not have control over many things that happen to us but we do have control over the way we think and act in these situations.
Suggested materials:
1. As cliche as it sounds, the quran. The quran is a great CBT if you reflect and contemplate on the verses.

2. Syarah Hikam by @drzul_albakri on youtube. Tasawwuf is a great way to align our thoughts.

3. Feeling good by David Burns. Available on Audible.
