The biggest fear is that without high-profile left leadership, the right automatically absorbs much of the naturally-occurring political restlessness of a society where real wages have remained stagnant for decades as living costs skyrocket and life expectancy decreases
The great value of Bernie's campaign was that it spoke to core frustrations and said explicitly that the answer was solidarity and unity across lines of difference (cultural, racial, national etc). What happens now, especially as the current crisis increases political volatility?
The right will repel vast numbers of people who are suffering the effects of a society in decline, e.g. there will be no big realignment of people of color to a racist movement. But centrists will downplay the severity of the problems and rely on defensive votes. That can't hold
It's clear how if we substitute the incrementalist center for the left, we cede power to the right, which will end in disaster. We were lucky to have Bernie's leadership over the last half-decade of mounting, inchoate populist energy. Without it we'll have our work cut out for us
If this makes sense to you imo it should be a kick in the ass to do whatever you can to build a viable left so the right and the center don't drag us straight to hell
