1) After enemy soldiers infiltrated friendly lines, Hospitalman Second Class Donald Rudd ignored the danger all-around him to aid his wounded Marines.
2) He moved around the broken perimeter shooting back at close-quarters with the enemy, all the while dragging casualties to safety and providing first aid. On numerous occasions, he shielded wounded Marines with his body while fighting back.
3) While treating one Marine, Rudd stopped his care to grab his rifle and return fire while laying over the Marine. In his final act of heroism, Rudd was mortally wounded. The Marine survived. Rudd was credited with directly saving 5 Marines that day.
4) For his heroic actions, Donald Rudd was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. He was 23 years-old. CITATION: Serving as Senior Corpsman with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment on 3 March 1968.
5) With his unit sustaining several casualties when a reinforced enemy squad penetrated the friendly lines and engaged the Marines throughout the perimeter, Petty Officer Rudd immediately went to the assistance of the injured Marines in the face of heavy hostile fire.
6) He administered life-saving first aid and removed the wounded to positions of relative safety. On several occasions, he was forced to use protective fire at close quarters.
7) When Rudd observed a seriously wounded Marine who was pinned down by heavy enemy fire, he rushed to the side of the victim and protected him with his own body while administering medical treatment.
8) In an attempt to silence the hostile fire, Petty Officer Rudd again picked up a weapon to deliver fire against the enemy position, while still shielding his patient. While engaged in this action, he was fatally wounded.
9) By his outstanding personal valor and self-sacrificing efforts, Petty Officer Donald Rudd was directly responsible for saving the lives of at least five Marines.🇺🇸 R.I.P.
