Here is the story of how switching classes a week into my freshman year of high school changed my life. I had wanted to attend Spruce Creek High School’s IB program since I was in elementary school, and was so excited when I was accepted. 1/12
To make it even better, I was going to get to be a majorette with some of my teammates from the studio I had twirled with since I was six years old. At orientation, they have you choose which electives you want to take in order, 2/12
and I had chosen all computer-based ones, and had seen during the video of options one about news that looked like it was all in front of the camera, which I absolutely did not want to do. I had done a Microsoft certification course the year before 3/12
and loved it, so went for computing electives assuming I would love those too. I never got to find out. When I received my schedule the first day, my elective was pre-IB dance. As a baton twirler, I decided fine, it was probably going to be good 4/12
for my technique anyway. So I go to class, and the first day isn’t terrible, but I find out a large portion of the grade in the class is massive essays, the second day I find out the strict idea what is expected of my dress-out clothes for the class(which would be hard for 5/12
me to buy since I wasn’t a tiny girl) and told what shoes I will be required to buy for recitals. I recognized the shoes from baton, and already knew that they weren’t cheap. I go home and told my mom, already unhappy with this class and all of its strict requirements, and 6/12
she encouraged me to go talk to my guidance counselor at lunch the next day. I waited most of lunch for her to be available, but when I walked in and said that I needed to change classes because the elective I was in required $40 shoes, she was immediately willing to help 7/12
and pulled up which classes still had available spots. There was one in Digital Video Production 1, and I took it since that was the only even remotely tech-related class available. When I walked in and realized I had a friend in the class, and the teacher was kind about my 8/12
switching in a few days late. I knew things would be ok. I kept that class in all its forms for all four years, and it is the reason that I am a telecommunications major, and the reason I chose UF, since when I toured the J-School it felt like coming home. 9/12
I owe so much to that class, and the compassion of a couple of adults who looked at a freaked out freshman and decided to offer help. I met my best friend freshman year through band and a shared geometry class, but I managed to keep her because I walked into my video 10/12
production class first day sophomore year and there she was, and every year after that, she was there waiting when I walked in for the first day of class. My disability took a lot from me but film has been the one thing it couldn& #39;t take. 11/12
