Quick thread about my day and I make no apologies for telling this story. Came onto shift and one of my Covid positive patients was on 15L of O2, DNAR and not for ITU admission. Really worried that she wouldn’t make it past lunchtime.
With the help of our incredible physios and palliative care team we managed to keep her in this fight and by the end of my shift actually managed to wean her oxygen requirements down to “just” 10 litres.
As home time was nearing we had the radio turned up and I was knackered, messing around and dancing in the bay. “(I’ve had) The Time of my Life” from Dirty Dancing came on and I upped my showmanship...
My poorly lady from earlier shuffled to the edge of the bed, oxygen in situ and beckoned me over before raising her arms out for me to lift her. Jennifer Grey to my Patrick Swayze. I obliged by getting down on one knee and helping her to stand for the first time in days.
As I left she was still sat out in her chair, and smiling. I pray that she continues to stay in this fight. And do you know what, I love my job x
