It is such a privilege to lead our Teaching & Learning Commons through this period. The university community is turning to us for help and the team is delivering. It is purposeful work and we are both inspired and focused. But the cumulative mental toll of this work is heavy. 1/8
Yesterday was the first day in over a month that I didn't spend working all day. Switched off my phone and didn't turn on my computer. Instead I played with my kids, did yard work, cooked, and read for pleasure. I am already feeling such a difference. 2/8
I haven't had the time or inclination to participate in exchanges #onhere or in the blogosphere about the impact of the current crisis on teaching & learning. There has simply been too much work to be done, too many urgent needs that we need (and want) to meet. 3/8
Thought leadership is fine, but IMO right now this should be informed by sweat leadership. From those supporting faculty who are anxious about how to support their even-more anxious students. From quickly building and delivering systems and supports with no time or money. 4/8
And from taking all of the flack, including about the many things that are not under our control--including government health advice, privacy legislation, digital divides, overloaded servers, etc.--and making sure that front line staff does not bear the brunt of this. 5/8
There are many lessons we are learning, to be sure. But we are also being thoughtful about our decisions and plans, including about why we urge folks in the direction of asynchronous delivery and away from surveillance technology, and why we advice compassion and self-care. 6/8
We are thinking, planning, reflecting, and responding constantly, on multiple fronts that are each constantly shifting. So to my colleagues at other institutions, I see your efforts and your approach and I salute you. I hope you are able to take a breath as I did yesterday. 7/8
We have already done what no one could have expected, but there is still a lot in front of us. Hang in there. And know that your leadership is exactly what this moment calls for. 8/8
