Since everyone is part of #timstwitterlisteningparty for @pulp2011 "Different Class", I'm going to add my part. For me, Different Class is, alongside @ComingUp20 and "The Holy Bible" by @Manics an album that captured precisely being 20ish in the mid 90's.
At this point, it felt the future could be OURS. That the world we lived in, ruled by moribund Phil Collins Tories could perhaps be overturned. That everything the future could be, would be. #timstwitterlisteningparty "Different Class" #differentclass
No song quite captures the cruel inequality of poverty for me as much as "Common People." If you've never had to wash your hands to get the stink of the factory off your hands before you go out to try and meet someone on a Friday night... #timstwitterlisteningparty #differentclass
.. or if you've never missed a meal, or drunk water in a nightclub because you needed that £2 for the nightbus, you don't especially know what its like to have a head full of dreams and a wallet of dust. #timstwitterlisteningparty #differentclass
And here's "I Spy". For me, this song was the soundtrack to a mundane life. I was a spy, undercover in a world not of my choosing, a prisoner in a suburban working class team, hoping to find the lightning rod that would make me escape.. #timstwitterlisteningparty #differentclass
BECAUSE I SPY. I walked among much richer people, who ignored me, and thought I was just a person. They had no idea. And the ideas I had were a thousand times brighter than fucking pondlife like Robson & Jerome who made music because ££. #timstwitterlisteningparty #differentclass
Somehow the whole of #differentclass was the articulate demolition of a life of denied chances. Somehow Jarvis took that sense of always being outside, and masterfully owned it. And inside every heart of everyone lives something like this. #timstwitterlisteningparty
