The Highland and Islands of Scotland should be independent. And almost every argument used for Scottish nationalism can be used to argue that the Highlands and Islands would be better of independent from the rest of Scotland. https://twitter.com/dmcbfs/status/1249353723568062464
An independent Highlands and Islands, is it too wee?

8% of Scotland's population (bigger than Iceland)
50% of Scotland's landmass (2x bigger Wales)
Bigger share of Scotland's waters

Most of Scotland's wind, wave, tidal, hydro energy. Aquaculture, whisky, water. Oil...
The union is only 313 years old, but the Kingom of Scotland is only 548 years old. It can be argued that the Highlands and Islands only came under "rule" after 1747, 273 years ago. I'm not one to get hung up on the historical idea of nationhood but there's a case here.
If we want to figure out whether an energy rich country in our general neck of the woods can be viable we only need to look north to Iceland, with a smaller population. The Faroes, although not independent, are also an interesting example of what can be done with greater autonomy
We have a parliament hundreds of the miles to the south which people feel is distant and doesn't represent them. It's called Holyrood and it's in Edinburgh.
Scottish nationalists will quickly adopt unionist arguments here. Why are they doing this, what have we done, they're a part of our country, we care about them. rScotland has adopted images of the Highlands and Islands as a large part of the Scottish psyche.
The idea of an independent Highlands and Islands sounds bonkers but so did Scottish nationalism in the early decades of last century. Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation. It's not Scotland's oil. xxx
