I keep seeing people asking/harassing @Glinner about why he is so "obsessed" by the gender debate & why he won't give it a rest or focus on other things. I find this bizarre because lots of people dedicate time to single issues. (Thread...)
We don't question environmentalists for focusing solely on environmentalism, or people on gun control, or any other issue you could name. What drives these people? Ongoing injustices & lack of/inadequate actions.
I believe @Glinner continues to focus on this issue precisely because he sees things getting worse, not better. (For anyone unaware of the issues I wrote this thread outlining my own views:) https://twitter.com/anoukelynou/status/1237742865532571654?s=20
I also believe that @Glinner views his platform as a way to amplify the voices of feminists & their allies who have been working to explain the issues for years before he joined the debate.
Many probably think this issue is only being played out, & crystallised within, the polarising cauldron of social media. I did, when I first learnt of the issues. But then, thanks to @Glinner's account, I started to hear from feminists & their allies.
I've learnt that the erosion of women's rights is occurring across the world & in many areas. Transwomen are competing against women in sports; men who ID as women only half the week are winning businesswoman of the year awards;
funding for women-only spaces like rape crisis centres is being blocked for being trans exclusionary; transwomen are being housed in women's prisons where some have raped other inmates & staff.
A lot of transsexuals who just want to live in peace are facing the far right backlash that has been bolstered by the increasing madness of the so-called progressive left trans rights activists who are stirring up bad faith & polarising the debate.
Many GC feminists & their allies ARE left wing & have campaigned on socialist issues their whole working lives. @Glinner, seeing the disgrace that is no-platforming, has tried to amplify such feminists like @selina_todd & @Docstockk who have faced this.
It is through @Glinner's constant tweeting that I have learnt of feminists like the above & @janeclarejones but also about how people with DSDs/intersex conditions are being used like pawns in this debate: @intersexfacts @RaeUK
I also learnt that there has been an alarming increase in girls transitioning & that many later, tragically, are detransitioning & through @Glinner learnt of @charlie_sci & many others.
I wouldn't have realised how many transsexuals are fed up with the propaganda & abuse & are speaking up, like @DebbieHayton , @KJ_Harrison, @FionneOrlander, @NewgentTGA , @BuckAngel and @_Mars_F
If it weren't for @Glinner's constant tweeting I would probably have missed all this. Yes, he's certainly not perfect & can be childish & rude, but... we all can, especially when being harassed, misunderstood & constantly repeating ourselves.
If it weren't from learning so much from so many people I would never have realised that this debate isn't about #BeKind but rather how a minority are abusing the goodwill that has arisen from the gay rights movement for much darker purposes, see @FredSargeant.
This isn't about denying trans rights. It's about the gradual creep into our lives that hard-won rights are actually expendable & that words are meaningless.
It's about a climate of fear that has developed where speaking basic facts about sex vs gender can cost you your job, like @mayaforstater or have you investigated by the police & brought to court.
It's about the propaganda machine of a vocal minority who have inexplicably driven many people & institutions into a state of fear & panic (probably because of failings made to gay & civil rights movements).
They are trying to tell us that anyone who states that sex is binary is a transphobe & right wing bigot. They simplify the debate as being about toilets & ignore the major concerns we have. They reduce it to transwomen vs bigoted women with no mention of transmen. To #BeKind.
But, to quote  @jackappleby: https://twitter.com/jackappleby/status/1148425600954241024?s=20
A particular concern for me that also highlights how unthinking people can be is that accessible toilets are being turned into gender neutral ones despite this being an infringement on the rights of those with disabilities.
Once you see it you can't unsee it & this is why I think  @Glinner is obsessed, because it takes time to explain the issues & to cut through the accusations of transphobia which are designed to block out the uncomfortable truths this minority are hiding.
I think there is a silent majority who understand all this. More still who just don't know any of this is happening. But most people know that sex is real & those who say TWAW/TMAM are just #BeingKind. But this kindness has been abused & that's what we're debating.
So maybe if you allowed for some nuance in your life, stop reducing this to being about bigoted women who refuse access to their loos, & proper pronoun use, you would see we're not actually transphobes, that our concerns are real & @Glinner can go back to writing.
