So, there’s a joke in THE OFFICE’s fourth season episode “The Deposition” that I laugh at EVERY time because of the way it’s delivered, though I never quite got the joke.

It’s that moment when Jan’s attorney is reading from Michael’s diary: “Just got back from Jamaica…Jan was very specific that this is not going anywhere, that it was a one-time mistake. But we had sex six times so you tell me. I am definitely feeling very eerie.’” /2
Michael corrects the last word to be pronounced as “aye-ree.”
As I said, I always laugh because of the way they deliver the lines . . . but I never really go the reference. What was the actual word that was misspelled as ‘eerie’? Was it ‘eyrie? ‘Airie’? /3

I finally googled around and discovered it’s “irie,” the Jamaican word for "nice, good, or pleasing.” Makes perfect sense—he and Jan were in Jamaica, after all—and I love that Michael misspelled it as ‘eerie’ in his journal. /4
That’s a subtle joke, and delivered well enough that it’s funny without getting the full nuance—and even funnier once you actually understand it.
Anyway, thank you for bearing with me in this episode of How I Spent My Easter Morning in Quarantine. /end
