Once upon a time there was a river. Someone (allegedly) made (or observed) an ox cross said river. Everyone* immediately decided that this was noteworthy, and they founded a city to see if it happened again.

(*Well - not everyone. A bunch of traitors later decided that there must be a nicer river somewhere else; they were wrong and don't know anything about punting and let's not talk of them right now)
You can only spend so much time looking at a river. There was not happening much otherwise, so people started thinking about all sorts of things other than oxen: theology, arts, the placement of commas in lists, and science.
