I’ve been reading the gospel accounts of the resurrection today.
Many people are rejoicing today, but as I read and meditate, I am struck with disbelief.
This story is ridiculous.
It’s nonsensical to the point of laughable.

Who could possibly believe such a tale?
I cannot for one moment wrap my head around what it must have been like to hear the women’s report.

The utter bewilderment at the impossibility of the proposition.
After spending the last 36 hours in mourning and terror - lamenting the loss of not only your friend and teacher, but your hopes of the return of God Himself to His people - fearing for your lives knowing that you are marked as his followers and doomed to the same fate.
To be told that he is risen?

A twisted joke.
But, then...

to see Him in your midst;
to hear his words;

to be faced with the reality that not only was hope *not crushed, but that He has overcome and transcended even the power and force of the empire.
To realize there is NOTHING of this world or any other that can contain the power of the love of your creator shown in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ.
And here is is,
standing before you,
snacking on some fish.
And then he tells you that “All authority on earth and in heaven has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations...”
The story is ridiculous.
It’s ludicrous.

But,

they did.
The same group of women and men, who yesterday were huddled in homes fearing for their lives, mourning the death of their friend and teacher suddenly walks into the streets of the Empire and courts of the religious establishment to proclaim that Love has won.
And everyone of them gives up their life to do so.

Stonings, crucifixions, banishments.

Y’all it’s ridiculous.

But. It’s also true.
And, today, in a way that I don’t know that I have been before, I am in complete awe and a little disoriented.

It changes everything.

He is risen.

Indeed.
